Listening, Learning, and Growing: Our First Year in Cambridge
The True Power of Language
When we think about learning a language, we often think about grammar rules and vocabulary lists. But at Potencia, we know that for adult immigrants, language is something much deeper: it is the key to advocacy, connection, and belonging.
Take Dounia, for example. As an educator and community advocate at the Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee (CEOC), Dounia works tirelessly every day to support low-income Cambridge residents. For her, improving her English wasn't just a personal goal—it was a professional necessity. After completing her first 10 sessions with a Potencia tutor, Dounia shared:
“Taking English sessions with Potencia was very beneficial for me. I already see some progress. I’m now much more confident to advocate for my community.”
By supporting Dounia, we aren't just empowering an individual; we are strengthening the very social fabric of Cambridge.
Year One: What the Data Tells Us
In our pilot year serving Cambridge, we set out to reach residents whose unique goals, hectic schedules, and specific learning needs didn't fit into traditional classroom models. Partnering with trusted local organizations and programs like CEOC and Pathways to Family Success, we introduced our personalized, one-on-one tutoring model to the community.
The initial results speak to the power of tailored support:
9 out of 11 learners reported a significant boost in their English confidence.
Over 70% of participants reported feeling more deeply connected to their local community.
We saw this connection come to life with Liang, an MIT postdoctoral researcher. While Liang excelled in academic English, he faced hurdles when it came to social and civic integration. Using his 10-session packet to focus entirely on conversational skills, Liang was able to break down those barriers, noting that he improved his oral English tremendously and felt a renewed motivation to participate in local neighborhood life. He’s already working through his second packet!
Growing Pains: What Cambridge Taught Us
True community work requires humility and a willingness to pivot. While our first year brought incredible success stories, it also brought critical insights into the unique barriers Cambridge residents face. We learned two major lessons:
Trust is Built Through People, Not Screens: Our initial outreach relied heavily on digital flyers. We quickly realized that the immigrant population in Cambridge navigates the world through high-trust, face-to-face relationships. As a founder-led team, we simply lacked the hours in the day to cultivate those deep, rolling relationships on our own.
Even Affordable Fees Can Cause Skepticism: We kept the nominal $5-per-session fee to keep our program accessible. Surprisingly, we found this created an unexpected psychological barrier. New learners were hesitant to financially commit to a model they hadn't experienced yet, making it tough for us to prove our value upfront.
Looking Ahead: Our Strategy for 2026
We are thrilled to announce that the Cambridge Community Foundation has renewed Potencia’s grant for 2026. Because of their belief in our mission, we are directly addressing what we learned in Year One to scale our impact and meet our goal of serving 50 Cambridge residents this coming year.
Here is how we are evolving:
Grant-Funded Free Sessions: Following a blueprint from our Boston program, we are removing the financial barrier by offering the first 10-session packet completely free of charge to learners signing up through our community partners. Our data shows that once a learner experiences the quality of our 1-on-1 tutoring, they are highly motivated to invest in their own continuation.
Hiring a Program Coordinator: To build the deep, institutional trust Cambridge deserves, we are hiring a dedicated Program Coordinator. This team member will focus entirely on managing daily operations and building face-to-face referral pipelines with Cambridge-based government agencies and community organizations.
It Takes a City
Building something sustainable and deeply impactful requires a village. We are profoundly grateful to the Cambridge Community Foundation, our incredible local partners, our tireless volunteer tutors, and our learners who inspire us daily.
We are ready for Year Two. If you want to be a part of this growing movement, here is how you can help today:
